Description:
Learn a unique approach to photography from artist and educator, Robert Calafiore, who employs a hand-built pinhole camera and analog processing techniques to create his signature one-of-a-kind prints. This workshop focuses on understanding the simplicity of how light travels and the inner workings of photography. Participants will learn how to use a pinhole camera and utilize traditional chemistry in the darkroom to create black and white silver gelatin prints, with a range of subject matter including still-life, landscape, portraiture, and abstraction. Explore the endless possibilities in each step of this analog process by experimenting with composition, exposure, and developing. Calafiore will also discuss the difference between picture taking and picture making, and provide a background on the history, current practices, and techniques of pinhole camera photography.

Instructor Bio:
Calafiore was born in New Britain, Connecticut to Italian immigrants. Both his early childhood and young adult experiences have played a significant role in shaping his interests and practice. Raised in a traditional Roman Catholic home, and part of a large extended family, the religious influence and the strong ties to traditions and work ethic, contributed in molding the way he relates to the world. He was the first to attend college, noting he is a first-generation American. After attending art school for both BFA and MFA degrees, Calafiore has focused on his artistic practice while administrating, teaching, and promoting the fine arts, internally and externally from a university staff and faculty position.
