July Plein Air

Description: 

This summer, Janet Iffland will offer a morning plein air workshop on the second Saturday of each month. This July workshop is the second of the plein air summer series. Participants will learn how to choose a subject, and with a focal point in mind, begin laying out the foundational drawing. You will also learn to utilize color, values, and application techniques. Take advantage of the Five Points Arts Center's rural campus and pull inspiration from the surrounding landscape. All levels of experience are welcome.

Materials:

Provided by the Participant: 

• Gamblin Solvent-free gel & Gamblin Gamsol odorless mineral spirits

• Portable brush washer or solvent container for on location 

• Palette knife

• Palette paper (9×12)

• Plastic grocery bags (2)

• Blue Shop or regular paper towels   

• Outdoor easel (French, or your choice)

• Stretched canvas (11×14) or oil primed linen panel (11×14)

• Small folding chair (if you want to sit)

Suggested Paint Brands: Gamblin, Windsor & Newton or Lukas Oils 

• Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Orange Hue, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Sap Green, Viridian, Yellow Green, Burnt Sienna 

Brushes: Any brand will work 

• Long flat, #2-6 

• Long angular, 1/4 and 1/2  

• Long filberts, 6, 8 

• Long rigger, long #0 

Instructor Bio:

Janet Iffland is an award-winning landscape artist. She has been plein air painting (on location) and in the studio for the past 15 years. She has taken classes and workshops from nationally prominent artists, including Douglas David Mark Boedges and Paul Batch, as well as attending Plein Air Conventions in Santa Fe, NM. Janet was born in Connecticut and has been a lifelong artist here, as well as spending winters painting in Naples, Florida. She has been honored with numerous show awards, and has been on the cover of Litchfield Hills Magazine. She is represented by Center Framing & Art, West Hartford, CT, 100 Main Street LLC, Falls Village, CT, and High Tide Gallery, Naples, FL
