Description:
Experience the thrill of wheel throwing in this beginner-level ceramics workshop! Learn the art of centering a lump of clay, throwing a variety of forms, and finishing your work with trimming and glazing. Develop your techniques by exploring the endless possibilities of shape and form. Over the course of this eight-week workshop, participants will receive individualized guidance from the instructor and have time to work independently during open lab hours. Gain a deeper understanding of the versatility of ceramics as a form of sculpture, fine art, utilitarian use, scientific, and industrial purposes. All levels of experience are welcome!
Open Studio Time:
Upon approval from the instructor, workshop participants will be granted access to the ceramics lab throughout the duration of the workshop. Aside from scheduled workshop hours, the lab is available for independent use Monday – Saturday from 9:30 am – 4:30 pm.
Materials:
Provided by Five Points Arts:
One 25-pound bag of clay will be provided which is included in the cost of the workshop. Additional bags of clay may be purchased for $33 each.
Glazes

A Clay Starter Tool Kit: a basic set of tools for working with clay, available at most arts supplies stores and online.

Instructor Bio:
Delores Coan is a ceramic instructor and artist from Canaan, Connecticut, and most recently taught for 36 years at The Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut. Delores Coan is a master teacher and a veteran of numerous teaching and learning experiences in China over the last 15 years of her teaching career. Delores has worked with and developed ceramic curriculum with native and master artists in the Amazon of South America, Africa and Japan. She has curated exhibitions featuring national and world renown ceramic artists for the Tremaine Gallery at The Hotchkiss School, in Lakeville, Connecticut. She has a strong background in traditional and sculptural techniques and is well versed in glaze science and kiln firing. A particular area of mastery for Delores is primitive firing techniques and cultural ceramic traditions from around the world. In addition, she is a professional wood kiln, raku, and pit fire ceramic artist and teacher.
