Description:

Working from still-life, landscape, and portraiture, participants will explore color, space, and form with soft pastels. This workshop is great for anyone starting fresh, developing, or mastering their pastel painting skills. Instructor, Suzanne Lacke, will demonstrate ways in which pastels can be used similarly to paint through blending, feathering, scumbling, layering, and more. Achieve a variety of special effects by using different kinds of papers and additives including pumice, gesso and modeling paste. Study master artists such as Rosalba Carreira, Edgar Degas, William Merritt Chase, and Mary Cassatt who would use pastels in their work. Additionally, participants will learn how preserve and frame finished pastel pieces.

Instructor Bio:

Suzanne Lacke is an artist and teacher living in Salisbury, Connecticut.  She works primarily in the mediums of oil paint, pastel, printmaking and drawing.  She studied art history at the University of Pittsburgh, drawing and painting at the Art Students League in New York City and received her MFA from the University of California at Berkeley. She taught studio art courses for 25 years in California at UC Berkeley, Santa Rosa Junior College and the College of Marin. Her approach to teaching is to encourage students to find a way to their own style while introducing materials and techniques for using them. She gives demonstrations and helps students as they take on the challenges of working with the materials. With a strong emphasis on drawing in her own practice she will encourage students to draw often, giving assignments to continue the practice outside of the class.
