All are welcome to join and celebrate the Year of the Dragon! Learn how to fold dragons, cranes and jumping frogs in our origami workshop, design your own red envelope with stamps, and use a bamboo brush to make Asian brush paintings with artist Christine Mitchell! Learn all about this holiday in our Library where we will be reading “The Dancing Dragon” and coloring animals from the Chinese Zodiac!

All activities will run for the duration of the event so you can jump from activity to activity! Fun for both kids and adults, friends and family!

Red Envelope Making

Gift-giving is a Chinese tradition during the Lunar New Year. Those gifts often come in the form of Red Envelopes, which symbolize good luck, each containing money or lovely notes inside. In our Red Envelope Making activity, design your own red envelopes with stamps, colored pencils, markers, and more!

Origami: Wishing on a Crane

Pulling inspiration from Japanese culture, The Wishing on a Crane activity invites you to pick from an array of colored and pattered papers to write your very own wish on, then fold it into an origami crane to take home! This activity comes with 2 bonus origami animals to fold! Learn how to make jumping frogs and dragons!

Asian Brush Painting

The art of Asian Brush Painting is a well-traveled technique that originated in China and crossed over to Japan. Instructor Christine Mitchell will introduce the art of Sumi-e brush painting using traditional materials. Learn how to grind ink and use painting techniques with a bamboo brush on rice paper.

Storytime and Coloring

Cozy up with a nice book and some coloring sheets in the library! Library Director, Sharon Waagner, will read the book, “The Dancing Dragon” written by Marcia K. Vaughan and illustrated by Stanley Wong Hoo Foon. Feel free to pull up a chair and color in some of the animals from the Chinese Zodiac!

Registration: Register ahead and save your spot! Walk-ins are welcome!
