Description:
Chemigrams are made using photo paper, chemistry, and light. This technique predates the invention of photography by over 100 years and combines painterly techniques and photography to make one-of-a-kind, cameraless images. In this workshop, participants will be guided through a variety of approaches to making chemigrams including chemistry application techniques, masking and resists, and incorporating physical objects into their design. The spirit of this workshop is one of exploration and play. At the conclusion of the workshop, students will come away with a selection of their own chemigram prints and a beginning knowledge of the variety of techniques available in the process.

Instructor Bio:
Jessica Somers is a photographer, educator, and parent to a large, four-legged, floppy-eared creature. She specializes in historic photographic techniques and self-portraiture. Jessica has been in love with photography for most of her life. She was exposed to the act of picture making through her grandfather, an avid amateur photographer, and in the family bathroom-turned-darkroom after sunset. Here, she witnessed actual magic standing over the chemical trays watching an image appear where only a simple white sheet of paper was before. As a kid, she received a Kodak disc camera and fell in love with the act of expressing her individual view of the world from the 4 foot high perspective of a seven year old. Her height has since increased but her love affair with photography continues.
* All workshops are held at the Five Points Art Center, 855 University Drive
