Join nationally acclaimed artist Grace DeVito for a 2-day oil painting workshop, “Painting the Organic Still Life”. Learn her process of multi layered still life painting by lecture, demonstration and critiques. Focus will be given to paint application and creating form. Individual instruction will be given throughout the workshop. For Intermediate and advanced painters. There will be various curated set ups to work from or bring your own favorite organic elements.

Workshop format: 9:00-12:00 Demo and lecture, 12:00–1:00 Lunch break, 1:00-4:00 pm Students paint as Grace gives individual critiques.

Day one will cover the block in and first layer. Day two will be focused on refinement.

 

Bio:

Grace Mehan DeVito has spent her life immersed in the art of painting. Her representational realist skills are equally adept at portraiture, figurative, and still life genres. The love of light and form imbue her work with beauty and timelessness, elevating even the humblest of subjects, bearing witness to the beauty of the world. Grace focuses her interest on the natural world. It is her desire to explore nature and present it to a viewer causing moments of reflection. Grace was included in The Grand Central Atelier’s first Still Life Competition in 2014 and in the Inspiring Figures Show at The Butler Institute Of American Art, Youngstown OH. She is the recipient of many awards including the Portrait Society of America’s First place Still Life and first place Commissioned Portraits Members Only Competition. She received The Award of Excellence for Realism at The Oil Painters of America’s Eastern Regional Exhibition, The 2018 Joseph Hartley Award, The David Leffel Award For Excellence in Painting, Best in Show as well as 3rd Place, and the 6th Annual Plein Air Competition Best Floral in Studio Oct/Nov 2016. Grace makes her home and studio in Stamford CT.

 

Materials List:

Please do not use student grade paints or cheaper art store canvas. The better the grade of materials the better your results. It does make a difference in the outcome!

Odorless mineral spirits- I like Gamsol

Container for Odorless mineral spirits

Viva paper towels or shop towels- these are both cloth like.

Palette - I use a glass or plexiglass glass palette with a midtown grey underneath but wooden one is great too.

Canvas- I use Claessens 13 DP, Raphael oil primed linen 4 coats or Paris linen available at Jerry’s Artarama.

Any of the premium oil painting panels (New Traditions, Raymar, Artefex) fine weave.

Brushes- I use a variety for different purposes.

I like Rosemary and Co.’s Master Choice long filberts in sizes 2-8, Ex-long eclipse combers sizes 1/8, 1/4, 1/2”, and some natural bristle brushes rounds and filberts, a few small, medium and large sizes.

Gamblin solvent free gel for oil painting or similar.

Paints- I use a variety of brands- Rembrandt, Windsor& Newton, Grumbacher, Michael Harding. As long as it’s not student grade.

Titanium White, Cremnitz White, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Yellow Ochre, Transparent Oxide Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Transparent Oxide Red, Transparent Oxide Brown, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue, Ultra Marine Blue, Ivory Black, Viridian
