Description:
Lumen photography is a camera-less, sustainable technique creating ethereal, colored images using organic objects and expired black-and-white photo paper. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to create compositions with botanicals, paper negatives, and other textured objects, creating photographic prints with startling color and texture. Experimenting with various non-toxic liquid solutions and common powders will further broaden the color possibilities in these prints. No photographic experience required!
Some prints will be “fixed,” allowing them to be seen and shown in all kinds of environments. Other prints will be saved by protecting them in light-proof bags for transport home, where they can be digitally scanned to preserve their original rich colors.
Materials:
Provided by participants:
Live plants and flowers from the garden, or from a florist or store like Trader Joe’s.
Anything with texture found around the house: lace and doilies (that you do not mind getting stained), net bags from grocery produce, office items like paper clips and rubber bands, string, stencils, small toys and glass bottles.
Fruits, vegetables, and herbs work! If bringing these, bring a kitchen knife for cutting them.
Paper negatives will be provided, but if participants have old maps or images they want to print out on plain black and white copy paper they can be turned into paper negatives.
Please wear old clothing you do not care about. This work is very messy and stains clothing. Also, wearing shoes with a gripping sole is advised for safety as there is a lot of liquid in use.
Nitrile gloves will be available for those concerned with touching chemicals.
