Description:

Using a standard sewing machine with zig-zag capabilities, you can turn ordinary cotton clothesline into a beautiful bowl or basket. Enhance the piece with scraps of fabric or complementary thread colors and finish them with simple zig-zag stitches and/or wooden beads. Teens and adults new to sewing can partner with a relative or friend (with a sewing machine) to make their mother a one-of-a-kind gift! (No charge for a second person attending as a helper).

Materials:

  • Cotton clothesline, 3/16 inch -100 ft. (Available at most local fabric stores and online, but it needs to be cotton)

  • Sewing machine in good working condition, power cord and foot presser

  • Cream colored thread and 2 preloaded bobbins in the same color

    • Bring another color for an optional second project for contrast

  • Optional: strips of cotton fabric, cut in widths of about 1 ½ inches and one piece of fabric approximately 10” square

  • Scissors for cutting rope

  • Scissors for trimming fabric

  • Jeans/denim sewing machine needles – at least two

  • Seam ripper

  • Fabric glue

Instructor Bio:

Karen Wolf has been sewing since she was 10 years old, when she learned to make doll clothes. She has continued to refine her fabric art skills through quilting, using standard methods both traditional and modern. She uses an Embroidery sewing machine for both rope and fabric projects. As an alternative method to enhance projects, she often hand quilts rather than using the machine method. She has attended several programs, including programs at the Schweinfurth Art Museum in Auburn, NY; Arrowmont School of Arts, in Gatlinburg, TN.
