Description:

The "Carpenter's Star" is a great pattern to get a new quilter going! It looks very complex, but is made out of two simple blocks; one being a square, the other a "half-square-triangle" (HST) - a square made up of two triangles. The HST is a basic block used in many traditional and modern quilt blocks to form other, more complex blocks, but itself is very simple to make. The new quilter not only masters the HST, but creates a stunning quilt that they will be very proud of completing.

In this workshop, students will have a choice of 3 different sizes of finished quilt tops to make: 72" x 72", 38" x 38", or 28" x 28". The quilt is made up of 64 blocks no matter which size you choose to make, the only difference is the size of the blocks. Larger quilt sizes take longer to make simply because you are sewing longer seams. The quilt uses 3 different fabrics: a background color (light or dark), and 2 colors for the star.

Note: This workshop covers the creation of a quilt top (without backing). A following workshop, "Introduction to Machine Quilting" will be offered on Saturday, May 23, which covers the entire process of completing a quilt, using a quilt top such as this "Carpenter's Star." More information about that workshop found here.

Materials:

Provided by participants:

  • Sewing machine, in good working condition

  • Thread

  • Straight pins

  • Rotary cutter, with good blade

  • Cutting mat

  • 24" wide straight ruler

  • Square ruler at least as large as 9.5 x 9.5", 5.5 x 5.5" or 4.5 x 4.5", depending on quilt size

  • Cotton quilting fabric or cotton batik fabric in your color preferences* (yardage will be sent to each registrant in advance)

*Note about fabrics: One of the star colors should be darker than the other, giving a shade and sunlit effect as they alternate around the star. Both the star fabrics should show up well against the background fabric. The quilt can be made in whatever colors you prefer, as long as there is enough contrast between the background and the star fabrics. Fabrics should NOT be striped or be directional. The triangles will be rotated in all directions, and will not look as good if you can see that one is vertical and the one adjoining it is horizontal. Small, allover prints work best.
