Immersion in Improvisational Quilting

Description:

Experienced quilters will have the opportunity to create an original piece of art. Meandering, curving strips of colored fabric of various widths can create exciting patterns and textures. Participants will design their own patterns and create the quilt top. The instructor will provide individual consultation throughout the class, ending with a demonstration on creating a faced binding and mounting quilted artwork onto stretched canvas. 

Materials:

Provided by participants:

• Sewing machine with walking foot

• Thread in various colors and ample bobbins

• Rotary cutter, mat and ruler

• Scissors

• Straight pins, safety pins

• Selection of fabric sufficient to explore and create

• Box of freezer paper

• Colored markers

• Pencil

• Blue painters tape

• Phone or tablet to take photos

Instructor Bio:

 Catherine Lavoie is a fiber artist based in Connecticut. She mergers traditional quilting techniques with innovative, contemporary materials to produce thought provoking artwork. Her five decades of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner provides a unique perspective, informing her artistic practice with a deep understanding of the human experience. Lavoie's art incorporates reclaimed materials ranging from discarded wedding dresses and vintage doilies to power cords and plastic shopping bags. These key components of her work are designed to spark curiosity and initiate new ways of thinking.

All workshops are held at the Five Points Arts Center, 855 University Drive

Workshops may be cancelled due to low enrollment if a minimum number of participants are not met. Registrants will be notified in advance and a refund or credit will be arranged (see workshop polices below for details).
