Description:

Throughout history, artists such as Maurice Prendergast would hand burnish Japanese paper to transfer their inked image without a press. In this printmaking workshop, you will learn to print by hand using various tools to create impressions on paper and produce second impressions, or ghost images, by applying release medium to the plate before printing. All levels of experience are welcome.

Materials:

Provided by instructor for a material fee (payable to the instructor):

• Japanese printmaking paper - $4 per 22" x 30" sheet (one or more sheets may be purchased)

Provided by participant:

• Set of brushes, in a variety of sizes (instructor recommends sable brushes)

• Q-Tips

• Drawing utensils

Instructor Bio:

Master Printer, Anthony Kirk, brings almost fifty years of professional experience to Anthony Kirk Editions (AKE). Born in Scotland, Kirk attended Art School in England before moving to NYC in 1974. In 1988, Kenneth Tyler invited him to head up the etching department at Tyler Graphics Ltd. where he etched and proofed plates for Helen Frankenthaler, Frank Stella, John Walker, Donald Sultan and Joan Mitchell. In 2000, Kirk established his own printmaking studio in North Salem, NY. Here he brings to each collaborative project, an accumulation of experience, thereby realizing in print, the vision of each artist whether established or new to the medium.
