Description: 

Create an original woven design using yarn made from natural fibers and explore one of the oldest forms of textile production alongside your fellow weaving companions. This traditional hand weaving workshop will cover techniques in winding two-color warps, dressing a floor loom in preparation to weave, and finishing cloth processes. Whether you are a beginner or in search of a refresher, all levels of experience are welcome.

 

Open Studio Time:

Upon approval from the instructor, workshop participants will be granted access to the Judith Pierce Whipling Weaving Lab throughout the duration of the workshop. Aside from scheduled workshop hours, the Lab is available for independent use Monday – Friday from 9:30 am – 4:30 pm.

  •  All weaving supplies will be provided. 

 

Instructor Bio:

Sophia DeJesus-Sabella is an artist, weaver, and educator based in Hartford, CT. Her woven and sculptural works interrogate class, gender, queerness, and utility by combining traditional craft with found construction materials. She graduated with Departmental Honors in Fibers from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2019. She has been an Artist in Residence at Byrdcliffe, ACRE, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and Lakkos Project. She has received grants from Foundation for Contemporary Arts, New England Foundation for the Arts, Assets for Artists, and Northwest Connecticut Arts Council. DeJesus-Sabella has exhibited widely including at Jewett Art Gallery, Ely Center for Contemporary Art, and Visitor Center.

All workshops are held at the Five Points Arts Center, 855 University Drive

Workshops may be cancelled due to low enrollment if a minimum number of participants are not met. Registrants will be notified in advance and a refund or credit will be arranged (see workshop polices below for details).
