Description:

Today, kallitypes are a valued option for the experimental photographer. While the process is not as versatile as platinum, it is an economical way of achieving platinum-like print quality, and are often confused with platinum prints because of the long tonal range. In addition, because the sensitizer is self-masking, they do not suffer loss of contrast in the deep shadows. You can easily change the tones from reddish-brown to darker browns just by changing your developer.

Of course the most important step to any hand made process is to have a good negative. We will start by making sure your negatives are a good starting point and then go on to try out different variations of the developer so that each student can achieve the color and result they are looking for in their own work.

Bio:

Jill Enfield is a fine art photographer, educator, and author, with a concentration in historical techniques and alternative processes, with annual workshops and lectures in locations around the world. Enfield has written 3 books on the subject that are used in schools and have won awards since the first one was published in 2002.

Her last series on immigration, was first shown on Ellis Island in 2017 and has since traveled around the country. The work consisted of portraits as well as The Glasshouse of Immigrants comprising of portraits as well as images taken on Ellis Island.

Enfield is working on a new series with the working title, “The Way Home” and consists of landscapes along the Hudson River. Both series were photographed using the wet plate collodion process to make ambrotypes.

Materials:

Five Points Arts Center will supply the equipment chemistry and the paper for this workshop. Participants should bring their own aprons and gloves.
